There are three types of brainstorming questions:

    • How can we make sure our ideas are successful?
    • What creative solutions can we come up with?
    • What are some potential risks we need to consider?
  1. Closed-ended Questions – These brainstorming questions ask for a specific answer and often require only one word or short phrase as an answer. This type of question helps narrow down possible answers and facilitates discussion around which answer best fits the situation at hand.
    • Do you think this idea has potential? (Yes/No)
    • How many resources would this idea require? (A specific number)
    • Would this idea generate a positive return on investment? (Yes/No)
  1. Double-Entry Questions – These are brainstorming questions that have two parts, where both parts must be answered correctly in order to receive credit for answering correctly on both parts of the question. This helps ensure that all participants are paying attention throughout the entire session, since they will only be given credit if they have both parts correct instead of just one part correct by itself.
    • What are the advantages and disadvantages of implementing a new customer service policy?
    • How can we increase customer loyalty and repeat purchases?
    • How can we better utilize customer feedback to improve our products and services?

While brainstorming sessions tend to be successful, it’s also common for participants to question the effectiveness of any given process. This can happen for a number of reasons: the process is too time-consuming, it’s unclear what the purpose is or how to structure the session, there’s no clear set of rules and goals.

Brainstorming questions can be a great way to help you think outside of the box and come up with creative solutions.
